Why Interspirituality?

During research, I discovered people yearn for a relationship with the Divine, not dogma, doctrine, or hierarchical leadership. Instead, people want to seek Source or Spirit within a respectful, caring, and welcoming community. Belonging is the key. So, I asked, “What connects the spirituality of all people?” This question led to Brother Wayne Teasdale, and many others, who also felt the birth of a new vision. Here are their words.

Brother Wayne Teasdale coined the term interspirituality in his book The Mystic Heart, “ Humanity stands at a crossroads between horror and hope. In choosing hope, we must seed a new consciousness, a radically fresh approach to life drawing its inspiration from perennial spiritual and moral insights, intuition and experience. We call this new awareness interspiritual, implying not the homogenization of religion, but the recovering of the shared mystic heart beating in the center of the world’s deepest spiritual traditions.”

“The Interfaith initiatives of the late twentieth century—the opening of dialogue and sharing of wisdom among leaders and practitioners of different religions – have flowered into an exciting new possibility for spiritual exploration and expression. Beneath the diversity of theological beliefs, rites, and observances lies a deeper unity of experience that is our shared spiritual heritage. Mystical spirituality is the origin of all the world religions, and every authentic spiritual path offers unique perspectives and rich insights into this deeper, direct experience of truth.” One Spirit Learning Alliance

While different faiths developed through specific prisms of culture and contexts in space and time, there are universal spiritual principles which are foundational to all of them. Interspirituality is the common ground, where all of the wisdom traditions meet. Interspirituality is committed to finding spirituality both within and beyond religion. What ties us together is a shared desire to connect with the Ground of Being in a way that fully respects our differences.” Joan Borysenko, Ph.D.
